INTERVIEW DE SIDEWALK !
(Version française)
Alors pour commencer salut les mecs ! Pouvez vous vous présenter, qui joue quoi ?
Bonjour !
Donc vous avez enregistrer un EP "We Are Your Radio For The Night So Shut Up And Dance" pouvez vous nous en dire plus dessus ?
(English version)
So first, Hello guys ! Can you introduce you, who plays what?
Bonjour! We are Sidewalk, a punk rock band from Utrecht, the Netherlands. Currently we’ve got Bouke Winters as lead singer, Martin plays the guitar, Hugo hits the drums and Pieter has got the ungrateful task to play bass guitar.
How have you started the band?
Hugo and Pieter started the band in late 2008 with Neals as guitar player. We’ve played together in several bands before Sidewalk and wanted to make some 90s flavoured punk rock. So we got together in an old warehouse and started writing songs on the spot. Simple, no more than three chords. Straight forward shit.
In 2009 we recorded two demos (‘Demo’ and “What To Do’) and did the first shows. As well we decided to add a singer to the band. Especially after the release of ‘What to Do’ in 2010 we got the opportunity to play some real cool shows, including support acts for Stiff Little Fingers and Useless ID. And later we also supported the Swingin’ Utters in Amsterdam!
So, Who writes the music and lyrics in Sidewalk? What is the messages in your songs?
The first years Neals and Pieter wrote all the music and lyrics. After Bouke entered in 2012 he joined them in writing lyrics. Last month Martin started as our guitar player and he is taking over Neals’ job in songwriting. We’ve already got two new songs in two sessions, so things are going really well.
The songs hit all kind of issues. There are some political ones, but most of the songs are about the daily life: love, death, happiness, sex. And things that annoys us (lots of that last one actually..).
So you have recorded an EP "We Are Your Radio For The Night So Shut Up And Dance" Can you tell us more about it ? And what are your future projects?
Yes, we recorded it in the beginning of 2012. Bouke just entered the band so he kind of started recording with us in the studio . Simon Speechless (also guitarplayer in The Accelerators) produced and mixed it. Great guy to work with! We’ve put seven songs on it with a 90s vibe. One song is about our hero in that decade and putted him on the cover as well, the one and only Chuck Norris. By the way, did you know that he has been to Mars? That’s the reason why there are no signs of life over there anymore.
About future projects: as mentioned Martin recently started in Sidewalk. First we’re going to write new songs with him. Then we try to record a new EP later this year, or a split record with another band.
But more important, playing gigs! In March we play our first shows in the new line-up. In April we’re playing in France (Paris, Tours, Blois and Rennes). And in the summertime playing on festivals, or whatever place is possible and in September we’re planning an one week-tour through Europe (including France again). Because playing gigs and meeting people is the best part of being in a band.
What is your best memory with Sidewalk? And what is the worst?
Good question. Best memory: Our first visit to France. Having played some shows in Belgium before, this was our first serious trip over the border, not knowing where to end up. The hospitality of all the people where we played and stayed was great! And later in Denmark as well, the people in the punkrock and DIY-scene are the best.
Worst memories? Not much. You’ve got those nights where nobody shows up because of shitty promoters, or when it appears that you’re the only punk rock outfit on a metalnight . But hey, it’s still better than stepping on a Lego brick.
What bands are you currently listening to?
Lots of. But to name a few: Screeching Weasel, Swingin’ Utters (check out their new record!), Teenage Bottlerocket, the Copyrights. Descendents, NOFX, Lagwagon and of course Dutch pride The Apers.
Thanks guys, see you in April !
Thank you! We are really looking forward meeting you and all our other friends in France again. And for the people we don’t know YET, let’s meet, dance and drink a good one!
Cheers!
